Jess & Jim | Newark Castle, Nottinghamshire | Village Hall Vintage Wedding Perfection And An Emotional Surprise At The Altar

As registry office weddings go, you can’t really do much better than The Gilstrap in Newark where newlyweds and their guests are ushered straight out onto the spectacular grounds of Newark Castle to share congratulations over the vows just made.

It was clear as soon as I met a nervous Jim at the altar that it was going to be a proper stylish affair with the groom looking dapper in a dark blue three-piece suit and a dusty pink bow tie (Adam assures me he could never pull off such a look!). After a reassuring pat on the back from his brother, Jim greeted his English rose bride who walked down the aisle in a stunning beaded gown, accompanied by her beaming mother and father, to the sultry tones of Haley Reinhart’s cover of Can’t Help Falling In Love.

One of the most enjoyable aspects about filming a wedding ceremony for me is how the couple express their love for each other when exchanging some of the most important words they’ll ever say. Some are giddy with joy, some speak with conviction, others are overcome with emotion…but what made Jess and Jim’s vows so special was how Jess surprised her new husband by vowing to take his last name, clearly a pivotal moment for both as they sealed their vows with a tearful kiss.

After enjoying the picturesque backdrop of Newark Castle in the summer sun with their closest family and friends, the new Mr and Mrs Wigfield hopped into a vintage Mini and headed off to their reception. Adorned with fairy lights, wildflowers and mismatched tea cups, guests were treated to jazz classics whilst relaxed in the surroundings of Allington Village Hall, styled to perfection by the bride and her mum. Caterers provided a gorgeous spread of afternoon tea treats before Jim’s brother Adam stole the show with a speech which offered a laugh a minute. If you need someone to write a cracking best man’s speech for you, I know just the bloke!

Despite the afternoon rain, the lovely Sarah from Key Reflections (who was the most glorious company!) and I managed to tear the newlyweds away from their adoring guests for a quick couple shoot on the leafy village green before leaving them to dance the night away…and judging by the amount of homemade drink on offer (I tried the gin and it pretty much blew my face off!), I had a feeling it was going to be quite the party - I’m sure Jess and Jim’s life together will be just as fun!
